Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Rebecca: I have just qualified as a teacher from Canterbury Christ Church University and I am now excited and very enthusiastic about teaching. I live in Huddersfield in Yorkshire now but I am willing to travel long distances to tutor. I am currently looking for a part-time teaching job so I can carry on private tutoring, as I have always wanted to help people who are struggling at school. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of teaching from the age of 15, where I volunteered to work in my local primary school, I then continued to return to the school until I was 17 years old, whenever I had free periods from college. Whilst at University I worked with deprived children over a long weekend, to give them drama skills. After obtaining my degree I got an acting job travelling around Barnsley, Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent, promoting safe sex by doing a theatre in education play. This was done with 13 to 15 year olds and after every performance we would do workshops with the children. On my P.G.C.E course I did two long placements, my first was in an affluent area of Ramsgate in a reception class and the second was in a deprived area of Canterbury in a year two class. I passed both placements with both good and excellent marks. |
Tutoring Approach: Even though I am offering reading and writing tuition for primary school children I have experienced older children and adults who also struggle with these essential skills. I would therefore love to help whoever I could, as not everyone finds reading and writing easy. I use the sounds write approach, which is a mixture of jolly phonics and the blending of letters together to make words. This, in my experience, has created very positive results in learning to read and write. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Marilyn: I am a young and enthusiastic Oxford Graduate, looking to pass on my love of learning; a passion for the English language and its literature; and my knowledge of civilization's great thinkers from Augustine to Zoroaster. In other words, tutoring English (with students from Primary through GCSE) and Philosophy and Theology (through A-level), University preparation and general research reading and writing skills (including essay skills) to students of all ages and abilities. I live in South London, I'm happy to have students visit me at home, or to travel to you, including Central and West London. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught a number of students, and I'm happy to provide references and testimonials. I teach both one to one, or if you arrange it, a small group (perhaps 3 friends) in which case the rate is negotiable. |
Tutoring Approach: On our first meeting, I like to work out what you hope to achieve from having a tutor, whether broad or specific: "an improvement in reading, spelling and comprehension", "working on Romeo and Juliet" or "improved exam technique". The advantage of having a tutor on a one to one basis or in a small group is that I can tailor the material to your specific needs, to your pace and level of understanding, in a way that just can't be done in a classroom. As we go on we can reassess these aims, and add new ones, too. I aim to help my students to understand a subject for themselves, as opposed to spoon-feeding information that may come out undigested! Learning to understand (and maybe even love) your subject is the key to success. |

| About Natalie: I am a post-graduate student preparing for a DPhil in International Relations. I graduated first in my class from a prestigious university in the US as an undergraduate. Right now I am attending SOAS. |
Teaching Experience: During my time as an undergraduate, I tutored many kids at the middle school level that were attending some of the best prep schools in the US. I have also taught undergraduate courses and have been a ESL teacher of English, and writing teacher in labs. |
Tutoring Approach: Teaching styles should depend on the particular needs of the student. I firmly believe that learning can and should be fun, but often teachers neglect to engage their students in ways that can make it so. |

| About Sophie: I might be expensive but I am worth it as you, or your child, will see a marked improvement in your/their results. Also to assess whether I am the right tutor for you I offer the first lesson for free. I was awarded a first class honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of Prior Kain Ltd which is an innovation company. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade. |
Tutoring Approach: My tuition method involves making Maths and Physics fun so that children and young adults will remember their lessons and overcome the "I can't do science" syndrome. So that you can assess whether or not I am the right tutor for your child I offer the first lesson for free. |

| About Kerry: I employ a modern and fun approach to tutoring. The key to successful learning is finding the ways in which we, as individuals, learn best. I am honest, reliable and most importantly - I enjoy the process of teaching and the rewards of seeing my students achieve - however small that achievement may be. I endeavour to help my students succeed yet in doing so, have fun and feel confident to use their newly aqcuired skills. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked within primary education in the UK for the last 2 years. Previously I had worked as a teacher in Barcelona and Almeria teaching English to a wide range of ages and abilities. I have taught English to large groups but feel that many progress quicker and retain their acquired skills far more successfully from individual tutoring. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer an adaptable, fun style and endeavour to provide stimulating lessons that are looked forward to, rather than dreaded! For those wishing to better their English skills, I pay careful attention to encompassing reading, writing, speaking & listening skills and handwriting. When teaching children, being flexible is essential. I constantly monitor performance and adapt my lessons as required. Whilst teaching pupils of primary age, I often involve parents in order to help them participate in the future of assisting their children. New techniques of calculation and terminology can often seem daunting but are not as scary as they seem! |

| About Richard: I am a qualified English teacher at secondary and further education levels (PGCE) with a degree in English Language and Literature from University College London. I am highly experienced and enjoy the intensity of 1-1 teaching or small group teaching, where progress is rapid and rewards are almost instant. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught for over 20 years and was head of teacher training at an Oxford language school. I have also been a joint chief assessor for University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate CELTA teacher training courses. During a long and successful career I have taught all levels, all ages, and all aspects of English, from EFL to intensive language and literature work, to students from the age of 10 to postgraduate Linguistics students. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy making rapid progress with the student in tutorial classes, specialising in study skills and exam technique as well as looking in detail at the actual subject - English Language or English Literature. The student often needs work on increasing their confidence, which in turn allows them to engage with the subject more successfully and enjoyably. I value rigour (both in the student and the tutor) but balanced very much with an emphasis on enjoyment. |

| About Aphrodite: I am an enthusiastic, creative and motivated person with a keen interest in the field of English language and teaching. I am a native speaker of Greek and I have been teaching English as a Foreign Language to international students of all ages and levels both in Athens and in the UK for 6 years. Teaching fascinates me as, to me, passing on knowledge about the language and the culture of English or Greek and watching the students' development is one of the most rewarding experiences one could have. |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to international students of all ages and levels both in the UK and in Athens, where I am originated from. Greek is my native language and I have taught to several students on a private tutoring basis. In Athens I was employed as an English teacher and general tutor in a School of Foreign Languages, where I organised and held General and Business English classes for adult learners and for our students' parents. As general tutor of the school, I was responsible for the general academic management. This included the training and supervision of my fellow teachers, as well as the progress of the school's students. I conducted support groups for weak students and workshops for exam level students, which increased the school's exams success to 90%. I also organised and supervised meetings with our students' parents. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that my non-native status of English facilitates the learning process for my students, as I am able to better comprehend and cater for their needs as learners, having been one myself in the past. I have always been a keen follower of the Communicative Approach in teaching, which ensures that along with grasping the structural aspects of the language, my students become fluent speakers of it. I also incorporate the use of modern technology in my lessons whenever such resources are available, as, with it being such a vital part of our everyday lives, I deem it necessary and hugely facilitating to the learning experience, as well. |
