Teaching Experience:
I have experience of teaching from the age of 15, where I volunteered to work in my local primary school, I then continued to return to the school until I was 17 years old, whenever I had free periods from college.
Whilst at University I worked with deprived children over a long weekend, to give them drama skills.
After obtaining my degree I got an acting job travelling around Barnsley, Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent, promoting safe sex by doing a theatre in education play. This was done with 13 to 15 year olds and after every performance we would do workshops with the children.
On my P.G.C.E course I did two long placements, my first was in an affluent area of Ramsgate in a reception class and the second was in a deprived area of Canterbury in a year two class. I passed both placements with both good and excellent marks.

Tutoring Approach:
Even though I am offering reading and writing tuition for primary school children I have experienced older children and adults who also struggle with these essential skills. I would therefore love to help whoever I could, as not everyone finds reading and writing easy.
I use the sounds write approach, which is a mixture of jolly phonics and the blending of letters together to make words. This, in my experience, has created very positive results in learning to read and write.

I was awarded a first class honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of Prior Kain Ltd which is an innovation company.

Teaching Experience:
My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked within primary education in the UK for the last 2 years.

I offer an adaptable, fun style and endeavour to provide stimulating lessons that are looked forward to, rather than dreaded!

For those wishing to better their English skills, I pay careful attention to encompassing reading, writing, speaking & listening skills and handwriting.

When teaching children, being flexible is essential. I constantly monitor performance and adapt my lessons as required.

Whilst teaching pupils of primary age, I often involve parents in order to help them participate in the future of assisting their children. New techniques of calculation and terminology can often seem daunting but are not as scary as they seem!

About Richard:
I am a qualified English teacher at secondary and further education levels (PGCE) with a degree in English Language and Literature from University College London. I am highly experienced and enjoy the intensity of 1-1 teaching or small group teaching, where progress is rapid and rewards are almost instant.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught for over 20 years and was head of teacher training at an Oxford language school. I have also been a joint chief assessor for University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate CELTA teacher training courses. During a long and successful career I have taught all levels, all ages, and all aspects of English, from EFL to intensive language and literature work, to students from the age of 10 to postgraduate Linguistics students.

Tutoring Approach:
I enjoy making rapid progress with the student in tutorial classes, specialising in study skills and exam technique as well as looking in detail at the actual subject - English Language or English Literature. The student often needs work on increasing their confidence, which in turn allows them to engage with the subject more successfully and enjoyably. I value rigour (both in the student and the tutor) but balanced very much with an emphasis on enjoyment.
