About Meghali:
I am a person who enjoys meeting and interacting with people, and have particular experience with children. My love for Theatre and Drama has developed me into an articulate and expressive individual with good communication skills, and I continue to be a part of various theatrical activities at Durham University.
I consider myself culturally sensitive, and find beauty in the diversity different locations have to offer. I feel I am able to adapt to new surroundings and challenging situations very well, having lived in many different parts of the world. Consecutively, cooking is another interest of mine, and I take delight in experimenting with cuisine from different countries. I am an ardent traveller, and have predominantly enjoyed visiting a variety of resorts in India, Switzerland, Italy, Oman, and historic spots of London and Paris.

Teaching Experience:

I have attended a fortnightly reading session with Year 3 students at my old school, as well as having done volunteer work with a junior school for their Sports' Day. I have also been a guide for 11-year old dyslexics during their time spent at our school for scholarship examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

Will alter depending upon the nature and ability of each individual tutee.

About Rebecca:
Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca B. Fern and I would like to be considered for the research assistant position within the CATS Study at your university. I graduated from Wheaton College in 2005 with a Bachelors degree with honours in Psychology and Sociology and continued my education the following autumn at the University of Leeds where I completed my Masters degree in Gender Studies.

I am a very enthusiastic, gregarious 25 year old woman who moved to the UK this past August subsequent to marrying a lovely Welshman. I enjoy music, theatre, traveling, rugby, football and most importantly, reading and writing. I have incredible patience and my listening skills are envied by many, qualities I feel are particularly essential to a mentoring role.

I have a relentless passion for learning and have found that it is in education where my heart truly lies. I am waiting for my husband to complete his degree before I return to the university sphere to complete my PhD. In the meantime, I am eager to seek other opportunities that will provide me with further experience in the educational realm.

Teaching Experience:

Despite endless hours of babysitting as a teenager, it was my mentoring experiences at university which provided me with my foundational experiences in interacting with children and teenagers. During my first year at university, I joined an after-school outreach program for at-risk children in our local community who primarily came from unstable home environments. We were responsible for interacting with these children for a few hours in the evenings, a time where, in our so-called sanctuary, they felt completely safe from the precariousness and violence of their home environments. The following summer, I was selected as a HERO (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity) mentor for a group of thirty first-generation college students. I was responsible for supervising both their academic and behavioural performance during their residential stay at my university where they were offered a glimpse into the academic and social sphere of university. Later, during my second, as well as my final year at university, I was selected as a preceptor (mentor) for a group of eighteen first-year students enduring their transition to university life. I was responsible for taking them through the orientation week and introductory activities, as well as acting as their student advisor, thereby monitoring their academic and social performance throughout their initial year at university. Collectively, these experiences provided me with the stepping stones to gaining confidence in my ability to successfully lead and instruct and in my capacity to communicate with individuals across the ages, regardless of their background.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an innate passion and drive to help others in need. In my experience I have found that even the offering of help can be incredibly valuable and motivational for others. It can act as a wake up call, as if to say "someone else has recognised that I am struggling" and furthermore encourages them to take action to better their situation.

I firmly believe that in order to excel at anything in life, you must enjoy the journey to your destination. Furthermore, I feel that if you can (forgive the cliche) make learning "fun" for individuals of any age, they are less likely to resist your assistance and more likely to invest greater interest in the learning process.

About damaris:
I am a Social Science graduate who's passionate about languages, psychology and the social sciences. I enjoy keeping up to date with research in the fields I'm interested in and one of my medium term goals is to undertake research (PhD) in Sociology. I'm genuinely interested in people and I like helping others to develop their full potential, which is the main reason why I chose to go into academic tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years of teaching experience, both privately and as part of voluntary work I undertook. i taught Spanish and Catalan to immigrants in Barcelona, helping them pass language school exams and prepare them for job interviews. During my last year at university and first year of postgraduate study, I tutored first year undergraduate students in Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Spanish. My tutoring work included preparation for exams and help with essay writing. I particularly enjoy this last aspect, and all my tutees improved their grades by at least 1 point! I have also successfully helped students with two dissertations in Business and Management.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning can be an enjoyable experience that can boost your self-confidence and belief in yourself. I very much prefer to talk about 'learning' than about 'studying', since I put more weight on the experience of learning by itself as natural part of your daily life. I'm confident I can make you enjoy learning and discovering interesting things about your subject. Try it, you have lots to gain!

About Frances:
I am 27 year old female who has a first class honours degree in human and applied Biology. I gained 3 A levels all grade A. I spent 2 years in spain where I taught english as a foreign language and also learnt spanish. I am a friendly, easy going person and i enjoy keeping fit and doing yoga.

Teaching Experience:

I taught english as a foreign language when I lived in barcelona for 2 years. I taught adults, individual and group classes, and I took weekly English conversation classes. I also taught children, individual and groups of children from ages 4 to 14. The levels ranged from basic english through to students preparing for advanced examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I structure my classes to the needs of the pupil (s). If the student is preparing for an exam then i will focus on the areas most important to the student, i.e. grammer, or conversation if it was english. For children it is important to keep their attention so teaching is often through play and fun games so they learn whilst having fun.
For me it is most important that the student is happy and so I will always talk to the student and ensure every lesson that the level is right for them. I give homework as i feel it is important to reinforce what has been gone through in ther lesson, unless of course the student does not want homework.

About Jaroslav:
I am a 27 years old male PhD student, with double background: in Mathematics and Psychology. Maths is my big love and pillar of my career and Psychology my big interest. That's about me, since I can't think of anything more which would be of general interest at this stage.

Teaching Experience:

Almost 10 years of one-to-one tuition experience
prepared and have led math preparation course for university entrance exams
altogether 4 semesters worth of demonstrating or teaching undergraduate courses in foundations of mathematical analysis, statistics and research methodology in leading Czech Universities during my postgraduate studies.
I am happy to send my CV if you take these things seriously.

Tutoring Approach:

PFFF: patient, focused, fun, flexible

In more words:

I love teaching, since I find it really rewarding to see the student overcome the hurdles and suddenly realise that maths (or another subject) is much simpler than it seemed to be. It is tricky to try to describe one's "Approach to Tutoring", but one thing I can say is that what people usually point out when they say I make a good teacher is, that I succeed in translating the subject to language of the audience. From my subjective point of view, I just try to go where the student is with his understanding and misunderstandings and work directly with his "mental representation", instead of general truth. The fact that one-to-one tuition enables me to do this even more effectively makes me like it even more than the lecturing (well, then it is much more about establishing contact with the audience and keeping their attention).

About Amar:
I am 28 year old gentleman, born in switzerland, and bilingual in english and french. I graduated with a BSc (hons) psychology degree from the University of London, and spent time teaching autistic children on a one-to-one basis in Geneva. I also practiced in various schools as a short term teaching assisstant.

Currently living in North East, since 2006, I embarked on a six months mathematics course in view of a career teaching Mathematics, up to the GCSE and A-levels. Having also some experience teaching voluntarily and on a PGCE training course, I am currently looking forward to working independently and efficiently.

I look forward to helping you or your child improve the necessary skills to reach your educational goals.

Teaching Experience:

2006 - 2007: Teaching Assistant in various schools:
- Swiss Cottage School, London
- Norham Community Technology College, Norham
- Little Eaton Primary School, Derby
- Planned and delivered mathematics lessons to pupils (aged 12-14) with various behavioural, emotional and cognitive difficulties

2004 - 2005: Geneva Centre for Autism, Switzerland & Canada
Therapist, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
- To teach sign language and speech to autistic children
- Prevent self-harmful inclinations and behaviours that would be obstructive to an environment suitable for learning and developing communication..

Partially completed a Mathematics PGCE covering many theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning. Extensive reading on teaching practice and extensive knowledge of cognitive psychology, learning behaviours, memory, and motivation.

Tutoring Approach:

I take time to assess the pupils level, by informal interview and gradually working through different problems with increasing difficulty levels. Most importantly, I make sure the learning experience is not stressful for the student.

The pupil/guardian has an important role in determining what will be covered, and when he is ready to move to the following topic. The most important aim is the satisfaction and confidence gained from having understood the topics of the day.

I make sure the student has a high success rates on the mathematical problems he must tackle, bt extending the level of difficulty within the reach of his capacities, and offering guidance in thinking and problem solving. I believe in the importance of the nature and timing of the feedback I give back to the student.

The student is encouraged to find, then to use, techniques to verify or evaluate the accuracy of his answers.

About Mira:
I have recently graduated from my second degree and am now looking to further my teaching experience with some intention to return to academia. I come from London though my parents are Arabic and I enjoy the diversity this offers me. I am passionate about philosophy and literature, reading and writing. I find working with children challenging, fun and very rewarding.

Teaching Experience:

Common entrance (11 year old) Maths and English
Common entrance French (13 year old)
Creative Writing (7 year old)
GCSE English Literature (15 year old)
GCSE English Language (16 year old)

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important thing for any student to be able to do is ask questions. I make it a point to instill courage and confidence in my tutees because in my opinion these are the building blocks of learning, in any subject.

My sessions tend to be relaxed and informal, though I aim to cover much ground per tutorial. The intensity of study can be decided by the student according to his or her needs, experience and age.

Above all I think learning should be fun and liberating. From my experience both as a student and tutor I think I make an able, friendly and enthusiastic tutor.

About samia:
I have been teaching since I left sixth form, as I finished my A-levels. So far my students have been from various backgrounds of study, including GCSE, Key Stage 1-3 and also an A-level student. I am living in New Malden, in the Surrey area and am willing to travel anywhere in London, Kingston and it's surrounding areas for my students. Currently I am pursuing Biomedical Science (BSc Hons) at Kingston University progressing on to my second year in 2008/09. I am passionate about teaching and enjoy it very much. In future I aim to be a Lecturer at University or College.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring Science and Maths GCSE and Biology A-level for 2 years now. My other areas of expertise also include Food-Science and Psychology A-level. I also have experience as a teaching assistant for Food at a primary school at Kingston. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there as I had the opportunity to do what I enjoy doing with such wonderful children and staff. I am proud to say that the progress my tutees have made since they have been under my tutelage has been remarkable.

Tutoring Approach:

During term times I cover all the school work in the first part of my session and prepare them for any upcoming tests, and the second part of my teaching schedule includes my own lesson plan which makes them ready for future study content for school. This helps them be ahead of the work to be covered at school and builds a strong ground. It also reduces the workload when it comes to revision for exams and doing the course works as they already have covered the content of study. If the tutoring sessions are during summer I prepare my students for next year's work they would be expecting when they join school, so they are ready when it comes to exams and gaining the highest mark, without too much pressure for revision!

I have classroom experience, specifically in Early Years and Key Stage One. I am currently working as a Children's Pastor and so have regular contact with children of primary school age.

I have a CRB Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.

Teaching Experience:

I have always had an interest in teaching and have experience dating back to my own school days where I would choose to work in schools during work experience, or volunteer to help whenever I could. I based my psychology dissertation around language development in children and spent time working in schools.

On an official basis I am a trained teacher with some classroom experience. During my training I had placements in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One settings.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to base it around the needs of the individual needs of the client.

My aims are to build students confidence in their abilities and to raise their expectations with challenging, pupil centered and rewarding lessons, producing great results. I am very patient and enjoy helping others to learn.

I like to familarise my students with the assessment criteria for the exams that they are sitting so that they understand exactly what is expected of them when they come round to sitting the exam.
