About Helen:
I am a current undergraduate reading History at Somerville college in Oxford University. As well as offering tution in my academic subjects I am therefore able to offer help in preparing for the Oxbridge entrance process including the HAT, interview and personal statement.

Teaching Experience:

I have helped my younger sister and friends with their work and revision over the last year and during sixth form. I have lots of experience of working with children so am patient and a good communicator.

Tutoring Approach:

I know from experience that different people learn in different ways so use a number of teaching methods. These include oral and visual presentations, rhyme and repition, games and quizes, formal testing and writing practice answers. I passionately believe that all children can reach their full potential if they have the right motivation behind them but more importantly the self-confidence in their ability. I also think that as far as possible learning should be a fun and enjoyable experience rather than purely something based on exams and results.

About Nicola:
I am 33 years old and a former History teacher who is now retraining as a criminal barrister. I am well travelled and can speak French, Italian and German. I have a 2.1 BA Hons degree in History from Oxford and a Master in International Relations from the LSE. Since changing careers, I also now have a Graduate Diploma in Law and have passed the Bar Vocational Course; I was called to the Bar in October 2007. I love politics, current affairs and history and stood for Parliament representing the constituency of Islington North in the 2005 General Election. I am also a keen campaigner for environmental and feminist issues, and have advised the Conservative Party on environmental and sustainable energy policy.

Teaching Experience:

My first degree is in History, following which I obtained a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education at Bath University in Secondary History, which involved GCSE and A Level teaching. I then worked for 3 years as a History teacher at St George's British International School in Rome, becoming Head of History and teaching IGCSE and International Baccalaureate. During that time, I taught both small and large groups and also undertook one-to-one tutoring of students who needed extra coaching. I am a qualified examiner for the International Baccalaureate and have regularly marked examination papers. I also have experience in teaching English as a foreign language, both on a one-to-one basis and larger groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to inspire rather than instruct and would love to pass on my passion for History and Politics, preserving the sparkle of learning for anyone who feels oppressed by the burden of exams. That does not mean sacrificing the rigours of academic achievement but combining academic excellence with the fun of knowledge and understanding.

About Tom:
I have been tutoring in some form or another for a long time - since I was at school in fact! I love learning and have generally found that I can make it enjoyable for others.

I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford. Since graduating I have worked in many different sectors over the years including the civil service, management consulting and think tanks. This experience has given me excellent practical and real world skills which provide a strong supplement to my academic qualifications.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a full-time private tutor now for a year. Most of my recent teaching has been for Economics A-Level, both Edexcel and AQA boards. I have also taught English and Maths at GCSE, Politics at A-level and Philosophy up to and including degree level. Please contact me for further details.

Previously I taught English and Maths at a Saturday School while I was at college and taught Philosophy at degree level while I was doing my Masters' degree.

Here are a selection of testimonials I have received about my tutoring.

"10/10...The tuition was very helpful as Tom explained how to answer the questions very well and always had patience when I found it hard to grasp something, even if we had been over it before. He would always be interested to see my method of calculation and then if necessary show me a better way ....

"Tom is an excellent tutor and during the exam I thought thank God I had Tom otherwise I might have broken down and I know I would not have been able to answer all of the questions." Mr Sanei (Mathematics GCSE)

"9/10... The tutoring helped boost my confidence and I especially found the exam techniques helpful, not just for economics but for other subjects too." Ms Robinson (Economics, A-Level)

"We would just like to thank you for coming here and for the work and all the support you gave Nishil during the lead up to the exams. He has spoken very highly of you and the lessons have given Nishil more confidence.", Mr and Mrs Parekh (Economics, A-Level)

"10/10... I tried out two economics tutors before you and neither matched your standard and that should be taken as testament to your quality." Mr Shetty (Economics A-Level)

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based on helping students to develop the tools to think through problems themselves. I find out what students know, and build from that to more complex concepts through explanation, examples and practice. I believe that everyone has huge unlocked potential to learn and understand new things if they are taught in the right way.

I focus strongly on the syllabus and past exam papers to build students' ability and confidence to achieve the highest grades.

I am patient, friendly and enthusiastic in my style, and sensitive to my students' needs.

About Philip:
I am a single 36 year old who lives in Sheffield. I am a highly intelligent graduate who likes to keep fit by playing football and tennis. I care deeply about the environment and recycle as much as I can. I have travelled widely, from America through Eastern Europe to the Far East and Australia and as they say, travel broadens the mind! I was a PGCE student at Canterbury Christ Church University for 4 months last year which helped me to gain the equivalent experience of a Level 3 Teaching Assistant. I am a friendly, hard-working and down-to-earth individual who enjoys learning new things.

Teaching Experience:

October 2008. Teaching Assistant at St John the Baptist Junior School, Penistone, Sheffield for 4 days. For 2 days, worked as Learning Support Assistant (LSA)at Barnsley College.
June 2008, worked as LSA at Doncaster College.
October-December 2007, worked as trainee teacher with Year 5 class at St Marys C of E Primary School in Dover.
2006. Voluntary teaching assistant for 2 months with Years 3,4 and 5 at Prince Edward Primary School, Sheffield. Voluntary teaching assistant with Year 5 at Dronfield Primary School, Baslow, Derbyshire for 1 month.
December 2005, voluntary teaching assistant at Dobcroft Infant/Junior School, Sheffield.
April 2004-June 2005, Basic Skills tutor in Norfolk Park, Sheffield and Sheffield City Centre.
June 2002, voluntary English teacher to a young Pakistani man for Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English.

Tutoring Approach:

I know you have to enjoy learning in order to get the most out of it. Therefore I would come across to my tutees as relaxed, with a desire to make learning fun and interesting. It may help the tutee to stress that learning is a habit, you can learn anything if you have good study skills. I haver spent most of my life in Education and so have studied many different subjects; For example, French as part of my degree course and Spanish to 'A' level standard at evening class, and Year 1 Italian. I have trained as a Basic Skills tutor in Literacy and Numeracy and also taught these subjects to primary school children and young adults. This is what makes me a good tutor, having gained experience of working with different age groups in different settings- Colleges, community centres, primary schools. I know a lot of school subject type information but also know how to explain it in layman's terms.

About Thanasi:
I am currently a PhD student at Swansea University and reside in Cardiff. I have my bachelor's degree in Psychology (BSocSci: Psychology) and was awarded an additional, more specific, honours degree in the subject in 2005 (BA(Hons): Psychology). During my undergraduate years, I also registered for and excelled in various Political Science, International Relations, History and Philosophy modules over my 3 year bachelor's studies. I was born and raised in South Africa and have a firm command of the English language. I have also lived in Greece for 3 years and therefore speak both English and Greek fluently. I'm interested in tutoring pupils who genuinely require assistance in either improving or maintaining their grades.

Teaching Experience:

I have been providing part-time tutorial classes since my second year of university (2003). I began by offering extra-maths classes to junior high school pupils and started off with a promising amount of students. I then continued to provide extra-classes in English and History (GCSE curriculum) in 2004 and 2005 to a few students. In 2006, I tutored an A-level student in Political Science, History and Psychology. She did extremely well in her final exams and was awarded two A's and a B. During 2007, I assisted an English instructor at the Greek Naval Base in various education-related tasks that included assisting in class preparation, composing and printing tests and exams as well as editing various work-related documents. In 2008 I provided extra lessons to a young lady in Cardiff who needed assistance with her A-level History and Politics. She obtained B and C grades respectively for the subjects (an improvement of 10% and 20% respectively) and is now studying Law at university.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in assisting pupils not only directly in their related subjects but also in actualising their potential and gaining confidence in their ability to answer complex questions under time pressure. I have found that a calm, supportive yet professional attitude is most effective in aiding pupils to find the solutions on their own, with the appropriate guidance provided by the tutor. In doing so, not only are the relevant methods applied in the tutorial classes by the pupil him/herself but in addition, pupils tend to feel more in-control and confident in facing tests and exams once they apply themselves within such a stimulating environment. The tutoring process would begin by assessing the pupil's level in the first lesson and then preparing the suitable course work and materials for the second lesson. Thereafter, greater exposure to related areas of interest within the subject will ensue in subsequent lessons. Students are also occasionally required to prepare a past-paper question that I will provide them with for homework however no 'deadlines' are set, given that the student has other commitments. It is in the best interest of the student though to answer these particular questions on their own accord so that they can gain as much as possible from the tutorials. I currently have two students (for psychology and history) and am willing to take on more students.

About alena:
I have recently completed a degree in History, at Swansea University with a high 2:1. However, at the beginning of my degree i studied media studies. I studied media and communication studies, History, english lit/lang and Sociology for my A levels. I recieved high marks in all of them, ranging from A's to B's and one C.
At the moment I am taking a year of studying in order to save up money for travelling. However, next year i aim to further my education by studying philosophy in Cardiff University.
I am a keen book worm and even when not studying I love rto read a broad spectrum of subjects. Currently i am extremely interested in any book concerning anthropology and the story of how life on this planet began.
After my studies i am considering teaching as a career so any work tutoring will be an asset to me as i am keen to help otehrs and share my knowledge and experience.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently assisting my younger sister through her history gcse. I also have another sister who i am assisting through her Sociology and Media Studies A levels. Both seem to be doing really well and thier grades are improving.
I have tutored many friends and family to use a computer from complete beginner to compentent independent user.

Tutoring Approach:

I have learned from being a student myself that the key to learning is discussion. By discussion i do not just mean explaining the subject but becomming involved in heated debates. For me tjis did not just make learning fun, but it also helped me develope a greater knowledge of how to argue a subject from each side, which is a key component in subjects such as English and History. Open debates also helped me gain confidence in myself and the issues addressing, therefore i believe this to be an vital method of tutoring.
I am a very patient and fun person, therefore once i know what is needed to be taught i will teach in the way i am confident will be suitable.

I specialise in my core subjects and I am familiar with both the OCR and CCEA syllabus at both A' level and GCSE. I have also worked with pupils between the ages of 9 and 14 on reading and writing skills. As a dyslexic, myself I have created a number of successful coping strategies, which I use in my teaching methods. I believe that creating a secure and relaxed atmosphere through active teaching and learning techniques encourages pupils to enjoy learning and achieve more.

In the case of specific learning needs, I will look first at learning strengths (ie, Visual Auditory or Kinaesthetic) before designing a programing to meet a pupils needs.

About Elizabeth:
I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics.
I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects.

Teaching Experience:

For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication.

In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development.

About Marc:
I have just graduated with a Bachelors degree in International Politics and Intelligence studies. I am currently undertaking a Masters degree in International Law, due for completion in July 2009. At school I studied Maths and Science at A-level, in addition to French and Arabic in my spare time. Aside from my academic life, I am the musical director at a local church and enjoy rock climbing and snowboarding.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught students up to GCSE level in Maths, Science, Politics and French. I have also participated in peer mentoring schemes whilst at university in order to assist my academic peers in formulating their dissertation theses.

Tutoring Approach:

Identify basic weaknesses which may serve as a barrier when addressing more complex problems. Ensure a sound and coherent knowledge base, and encourage students to exercise initiative and logic to use what they know to address what they do not. In all cases, examine multiple solutions to problems to remove demarcation points in the context of wider subject knowledge.

About Erman:
The subjects I would like to teach are Turkish, Politics, Philosophy and Sociology on which I have been studying for nearly 6 years in academic level. My BA degree is in Political Science and my MSc is in Political Theory (from LSE). At the moment I am a continuing PhD student in Humanities department at the University of London. I have voluntarily, academically and professionally taught in several subjects and I am preparing to be an academic lecturer mainly in Nietzsche, Kant, Aesthetics, Ethics and Political Philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor in Alphatutors since last year. But before that I was giving private courses in Politics, Philosophy and Turkish.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is both traditional and alternative since while I create outlines for each class and assign homework, I also apply non-conventional methods like discussing the logic of every rule in order to teach the student the substance or the core of the subject. This enables them to approach the subject and gives them power and motivation to interpret the questions or problems using the knowledge they acquire from the tuition.
