For a hobby, I work on ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts, with people in France, Spain, and world-wide.

I have a wide range of teaching experience over 30 years, in primary and secondary schools, in universities and adult education. I have worked on a one to one basis, in small groups and with larger classes. I have particular experience of helping students with dyslexia or other learning difficulties.
Please note: Greek means 'ancient Greek' (classical or biblical).

Tutoring Approach:
My chief aim in tutoring is to give the students confidence in their abilities and to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses as well as the way they learn best. I like to make the lessons enjoyable and stimulating, adjusting the level of challenge to suit the student. The lessons do not have to be for an exam, they can also be a leisure activity. My philosophy is that everyone can learn a language, and that it can be fun!

I am currently a PhD student at Swansea University and reside in Cardiff. I have my bachelor's degree in Psychology (BSocSci: Psychology) and was awarded an additional, more specific, honours degree in the subject in 2005 (BA(Hons): Psychology). During my undergraduate years, I also registered for and excelled in various Political Science, International Relations, History and Philosophy modules over my 3 year bachelor's studies. I was born and raised in South Africa and have a firm command of the English language. I have also lived in Greece for 3 years and therefore speak both English and Greek fluently. I'm interested in tutoring pupils who genuinely require assistance in either improving or maintaining their grades.

Teaching Experience:
I have been providing part-time tutorial classes since my second year of university (2003). I began by offering extra-maths classes to junior high school pupils and started off with a promising amount of students. I then continued to provide extra-classes in English and History (GCSE curriculum) in 2004 and 2005 to a few students. In 2006, I tutored an A-level student in Political Science, History and Psychology. She did extremely well in her final exams and was awarded two A's and a B. During 2007, I assisted an English instructor at the Greek Naval Base in various education-related tasks that included assisting in class preparation, composing and printing tests and exams as well as editing various work-related documents. In 2008 I provided extra lessons to a young lady in Cardiff who needed assistance with her A-level History and Politics. She obtained B and C grades respectively for the subjects (an improvement of 10% and 20% respectively) and is now studying Law at university.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe in assisting pupils not only directly in their related subjects but also in actualising their potential and gaining confidence in their ability to answer complex questions under time pressure. I have found that a calm, supportive yet professional attitude is most effective in aiding pupils to find the solutions on their own, with the appropriate guidance provided by the tutor. In doing so, not only are the relevant methods applied in the tutorial classes by the pupil him/herself but in addition, pupils tend to feel more in-control and confident in facing tests and exams once they apply themselves within such a stimulating environment. The tutoring process would begin by assessing the pupil's level in the first lesson and then preparing the suitable course work and materials for the second lesson. Thereafter, greater exposure to related areas of interest within the subject will ensue in subsequent lessons. Students are also occasionally required to prepare a past-paper question that I will provide them with for homework however no 'deadlines' are set, given that the student has other commitments. It is in the best interest of the student though to answer these particular questions on their own accord so that they can gain as much as possible from the tutorials. I currently have two students (for psychology and history) and am willing to take on more students.

Tutoring Approach:
Having been tutored at a young age, struggling with the ability to comprehend everything in a class of over 25 or 30 people, I was given the necessary attention to allow my academic ability to bloom in a more reassuring environment. I found that in the intimate environment that tutoring offers, I was able to have my questions answered and receive the attention that is rarely possible in the majority of school classrooms. This helped to build my confidence inside and outside of schoolwork and set me in good stead for the remainder of my life, personally and academically. As a tutor myself now, I have found that I can encourage a lot of appeal in the student by simply relating the material to their own interests. Helping a student as a part of their life and development academically is very rewarding and managing to help those with little confidence come through adversity and achieve extremely good exam results is in itself invaluable. Having recently completed a first class BA in Classics, I feel that I am even more prepared to aid students of ancient languages with my fresh and very relaxed approach to tutoring exam/coursework. It is worth understanding that as a tutor, I hold a completely different relationship with the student from that between a teacher and pupil, and will try not only to aid their understanding of the subject matter, but to make it enjoyable and hopefully, help them achieve the development and results they desire.

In 2002 I took a permanent position as a piano teacher in Music Schools after the relevant Greek Ministry of Education's teaching competition.

My would say that my approach differs from student to student, because I'm always trying to discover his/her personal potentials and, most importantly, make him/her capable of listening to himself/herself and correcting his /her own mistakes.
