| About Tahmeena: I'm a 19 year old currently studying Engineering at the University of Cambridge. I am a fun, lively and mature person who, prior to moving into engineering, considered a career in teaching. I love to paint, draw, play guitar and row. I am very able in Mathematics and would consider tutoring on a multiple number of subjects on request. I, along with 2 brothers and sisters, have all passed the 11+ so would be willing to advise on that. My prices are negotiable as I didn't really have a figure in mind. If your child is inquistive and wants to learn... I don't mind if the fee is reduced! |
Teaching Experience: - 2 weeks work experience at a Primary school - Tutoring a fellow student in GCSE maths whilst at college - Working at a summer playscheme for children |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is a relaxed one, that I feel gets results. Children can have fun with me, but I make sure that they know that I expect results. My plan has always get people to practice and practice... particularily with Maths, to pass an exam, familiarity with the questions to be asked is the key thing. |

| About Susan: 23 year old female, living in Manchester city centre. I am originally from Liverpool and came to Manchester to study English Literature and Language at University, gaining a 2.1. honours degree. I decided to stay in Manchester as I find it an amazing city and have some great friends here. I currently work as an insurance underwriter and have been for the past two years. I thoroughly enjoy my job and I am very dedicated and ambitious, currently studying and participating in exams with the aim of achieving a diploma in insurance. In my spare time I enjoy going the gym, playing badminton, painting artwork, going the pub (etc) and I'm also a keen cook. I am able to work in the pupil's home and I am also willing to travel to pupils houses as long as is near to City Centre (and accessible by tram, bus, train etc as do not drive) I have always had a desire to teach, but was never interested in doing it full time, therefore becoming a personal tutor would be a perfect opportunity for me to do something worthwhile which i will enjoy. |
Teaching Experience: I have not had any previous teaching experience |
Tutoring Approach: I am young, approachable and believe the best learning will be in an environment where enjoyment is factored in. I will ensure this is the case. I am extremely patient, friendly and a clear communicator and I value these attributes as being significant benefits required when offering personal tutoring. I may not have the experience of other tutors but I feel i certainly have the enthusiasm and helpful, dedicated attitude that will ensure i am alert to the pupil's needs. |

View Sian's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Sian: I've been working as a tutor for over seven years since obtaining an MSc in Latin Ameircan Politics from the University of London. My methods vary according to the student's needs, each student is an individual and the one-to-one environment is perfect for getting to know the subject thoroughly. As an experienced traveller and writer/novelist I try to take the subject out of the text book and bring it to life. Enthusiasm isn't everything but it makes a great difference and I like to think my passion for the subjects I teach is infectious. The emphasis is on learning in a relaxed and pleasant environment, teaching and learning are far more effective if both tutor and student are enjoying the experience. Rember, it's not school and a tutor is not a teacher. It's our job to fill in the gaps and instill lost confidence - 'positive reinforcement', as Piaget said. I can't guarantee everyone a grade A or A*, but I will bring out the best in you. |
Teaching Experience: Experienced not only as a tutor but in many other fields such as writing and travel. I've been teaching since 2000 and as well as personal one-to-one tuition I've taught in adult education and pre-school Spanish. Every year I take a dozen or more students through the exam process at both GCSE and A level. I have an extensive knowledge of the specifications of the main exam boards and, having marked papers in the past, I know what examiners are looking for. A lot of it's about technique, it's certainly not rocket science. There are plenty of ways in which the student can improve his or her grades by learning a few simple rules about exam techniques but silly mistakes can cost dear. I can still remember the words of my A level geography teacher, many years ago: 'you don't fail exams on what you don't know, you fail on what you thought you knew but didn't.' I've long since learned to leave no stone unturned. |
Tutoring Approach: Enthusiasm and attention to detail. I don't do second-best! I don't do clock-watching, quality is more important than quantity, I charge per lesson, not per hour an if takes more than sixty minutes to get the message home I'll stay until the penny's dropped, so to speak, and won't charge any more. Tuition isn't cheap, it's imperative that the student gets value to money. It is, after all, their future. |

| About Elizabeth: Having just finished my A-levels and started university in Newcastle I am a very open and friendly person. I am easy to talk to and love to help people and pass on my knowledge of Geography in the way I feel is most appropriate. |
Teaching Experience: My work experience for A-level was in a primary school and this is the only teaching experience I have. However as only a few months previous I myself was sitting my A-levels I feel that the revision and learning techniques I used that were so successful are still fresh and ready to be passed on to those who are now in the same situation I was not long ago. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very professional attitude to tutoring, merely passing on my knowledge in the simplest of terms that worked so well for myself. As I only passed my A-levels a couple of months earlier I am keen to pass on my student friendly approach to studying the subject of Geography. |

| About Danielle: I am currently studying part-time for my law degree, i have also completed my ILEX Level 3 law diploma, which includes, property, business, family, tort and criminal law. I am hard working and organised, i also work exceptionally well with children of a variety of ages. I understand that every child requires a different teaching approach and i am capable to adapt to any child's needs. |
Teaching Experience: I hold no official tutoring experience however I have taught various family members aspects of English Literature, maths and law. This has given me an advantage, as I've worked with children of all ages and abilities, and has meant i have also learnt from them as to how best to get information across to them and also for them to be able to use the knowledge in the future. Also I've held managerial positions in previous job roles so i have always held a supervisory role to other members of my teams, which has meant I've had to be inventive and used constructive criticism when necessary so in the work place people can achieve their possible best. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring would vary for each student. However i would ensure that there was a structured lay out for each topic, also ensuring at the end of each lesson exactly what the student understood and anything that would require further work I would consider a different approach of teaching. |

| About Junejo: I am currently doing my Phd in Mechnical Engineering at Loughborough University. My research area is related to computer assisted orthopaedic surgery. |
Teaching Experience: During my Bachelor and Masters I used to teach A-Level students in subjects such as Maths, Geography, Economics. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to try to allow the students to do as much of the work as they possibly can by themselves and I coach them along and do my best to smooth over the rough spots. As in my view ideal tutors must be activators rather than facilitators. Activators cause active student learning by motivating and leading students with appropriate, open-ended questions. I do not have a "method" or "strategy" for tutoring because each student is an individual. |

| About Paul: My name is Paul and I am an MA student at Durham University. I have a BA in International Relations and Modern History, and A levels in Maths, History and Business Studies (All A grades) as well as French AS level and several other A grade GCSEs. Not only this but I also have a lot of experience in working with children, having worked at a summer cmpa in America the past two summers, working with a variety of ages from 8 through 17. I have also volunteered and worked in local schools with the University and mentored sixth formers whilst doing my undergraduate degree. I have a valid CRB background check and have been through extensive child protection training with the YMCA and evidence of this is available upon request. |
Teaching Experience: I started tutoring whilst doing my A-levels where I tutored several children in the main school my sixth form was attached to and enabled them to improve their grades over the course of their GCSE year, several from D to A grades. I continued with some tutoring during my undergraduate studies and enjoy the results when a tutee improves their knowledge of their subject with my help. I am looking to continue this at Durham University and hope to help several tutees in the area. |
Tutoring Approach: I find that it is most constructive to ask the tutee what they feel they are struggling with first off the bat and address these immediate concerns through methods of different explaining methods and going through exercises with them, as once these are dealt with they will expose other gaps in their knowledge or other areas they do not feel comfortable with. I also am a huge advocate of teaching good exam technique as this can really make the difference between the higher grades and will pass on my knowledge to my tutees. |

| About Paul: Apart from being an active teacher, I've also had jobs and interests in many other aspects of life, giving me a wide variety of experiences which I find helpful when teaching young people. I've also helped bring up two children of my own and have two lovely granddaughters, which help to give me another perspective of the learning experience and the attitudes of young people today. |
Teaching Experience: I have a B.A. [Hons] in Primary Education and have taught both full time in schools and for the past seven years I've been supply teaching. During this time I have taught in over 100 different schools over quite a wide area and encountered children of all abilities, attitudes and ethnic backgrounds. I have taught all age ranges from Nursery to 11+ and older children in a Special School, although the majority of my teaching has been in Key Stage 2. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that tutoring, especially one-to-one, should be tailored to gently push children further than they would be able to get in the normal classroom situation, especially by matching the teaching and learning style to the individual child. By starting gradually and steadily progressing children often out-perform anything they thought possible. I find that children learn best in a quiet, settled environment, which is why I offer the facility at my house, or try to achieve in the child's own home. |

| About Prashant: I am currently a medical student studying at Imperial College. Having just finished my 3rd year at medical school, I am now looking forward to tutoring from the youth of 5 years olds to 16-18 year olds preparing for a-levels and setting there sights on further education at University. My strengths lie in maths and the 3 science's subjects which I studied at A-level. I am a very calm and friendly person, and thrive at helping others in any way or form I can. Being a highly motivated person, I find it very challenging to try and make students of all age achieve their full potential and achieve the success I have so far and beyond. |
Teaching Experience: Through out my educational career I have always tried to tutor those younger then me. Whilst studying at Broomfield school (New Southgate) I performed as a mentor for students in year 7 and 8 (age 11-13) When I was in 6 form my teachers happily allowed me to run after school revision sessions for students preparing for their GCSE. Most recently, during the summer 2006, I was asked to tutor 2 of my GP's children for 4 months. One of the children was a 7 year old boy, and the other was a 15 year old girl preparing for her GCSE exams. Besides having valuable experience in teaching, having spent the last year studying at Chelsea and Westminster hospital and interacting with patients, I have gained valuable inter-personal skills and how to make people feel comfortable |
Tutoring Approach: As it has only been a few years ago since I finished my a-levels, I truly do understand how difficult it maybe for students to sometimes find things difficult, boring or just feel hard to get motivated to study. Because of this, my approach to tutoring is to try and make everything as interesting as possible. I always try to make my sessions as interactive as possible, since I believe this is the best way to learn. I generally try to split my sessions into 3 different sections compromising of: 1) First understanding the students knowledge on the topic 2) Teaching the student the topic 3) Providing questions to the student to see how well they have understood I am also a big believer in having breaks during sessions e.g. in a 2 hour revision period ill give the student a 10 minute break after 1 hour, making the whole session last 2 hours and 10minutes, but will only charge for 2 hours. |
