Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Victoria: I am a 23 year old highly experienced tutor who is young enough to remember what it is like to be at school as well as the examination processes and criteria, yet mature enough to tutor to very high standards. I have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and part-Masters in Education. I'm a very patient and cheerful person who loves teaching adults and children alike to help them achieve their full potential. If you're an adult struggling with anything from the basics of computing or reading and writing skills or a child struggling with any of my specialist subject areas shown on the price list I can really help. I consider my strongest subjects to be mathematics, ICT (computers) and psychology, but am flexible and will help in any subject wherever I can. Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries. I can currently accommodate tutoring appointments in 1 hour, 1.5 hour and 2 hour blocks during weekdays, weekends and evenings. |
Teaching Experience: Since the age of 16 I have been gaining teaching experience. I spent two of my high school years helping out a Year 7 mathematics class and a Year 8 pastoral class. I also have high levels of voluntary teaching experience from ages 5 to adult as a result of helping out in primary and secondary schools as well as teaching family members how to use computers from basic to advanced standards. I have spent 9 months of the past year training to be a fully qualified teacher, gaining a part-Masters in Education. I spent half of this time in schools teaching full primary classes and the other half learning theories and approaches to education. |
Tutoring Approach: My approaches vary depending on the child. I firmly believe that high levels of encouragement and a patient attitude on my part are key. The first part of the session would involve assessing the needs of the pupil based on what they believe their targets should be as well as any recommendations by the parents/guardians (in the case of children). I would then focus on those areas by setting achievable yet challenging targets to turn these areas for improvement into strengths. I am happy to provide the pupil with out-of-hours tasks to complete to really perfect what they have learned during the session and then assess, discuss and rectify any difficulties that have arisen in the next session. |

Teaching Experience: I am a qualified teacher with over 9 years of teaching both in New Zealand and England. I am qualified in England and have the correct qualifications needed to teach over here. I have taught both key stage 1 and 2. I have been coordinators of subjects as well as head of year groups. |
Tutoring Approach: As I stated before, I try to teach in a way that children understand. I try to teach so that children can relate it to their own knowledge and ideas. I always find out their interests and use this to engage them in learning. This especially work with reluctant writers. I am extremely pleasant and cheerful when it comes to tutoring as I firmly believe everyone is capable of achieving. |

| About Donna: Hi, I am 22 years old and currently studying to be a primary school teacher. I am in my third year at university and absolutely love teaching. I am a member of St John Ambulance, so am first aid qualified, and i hold a CRB certificate. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently studying to be a primary school teacher. As part of my course, i attend teaching placements, where i plan and teach a large percentage of my time at schools. I specialise in English and French. |
Tutoring Approach: I think learning should be fun. Concepts can be taught in physical ways, ways in which children understand. I feel children will respond to a younger tutor, and still being in education myself, i have knowledge about the new ways of teaching!! I try not to use worksheets, as children just don't enjoy them! |

I believe my approach is friendly but firm and I try to encourage interest in the subject by relating them to every day. |

| About Jennifer: I have recently graduated in Japanese and English Linguistics from Newcastle University with a 2:1 hons. Encouraging people to make the most of languages really inspired me to pursue tutoring. I developed my interest in languages while learning German at school which also gave me my first opportunity to travel and experience other cultures. The beautiful intricacies of Japanese customs and the intriguing complexity of the language motivated me to study Japanese at university. Modern Languages is an essential part of the curriculum: developing students' confidence and communication skills, and expanding their ability to communicate their opinions. I appreciate the disastrous effect removing languages from compulsory education will have and hope to inspire children into enjoying languages as much as I do. The demand for interpreters and other language related professionals means this is equipping students with something extremely useful for the rest of their lives. |
Teaching Experience: As I had always been interested in speech and language science, a profession closely linked with education, I undertook work experience in a school for children with speech and language difficulties. Assisting both the teaching and language support staff meant I could sample both vocations. I believe the key to being a successful teacher lies in successfully communicating complex information. During the summer I taught Japanese privately in Leeds. My experience of language learning taught me how different teaching methods can have a completely different effect on students. Combining this knowledge with my private teaching experience confirmed for me that a more personal approach was always effective. |
Tutoring Approach: I use visual aids and other supplementary materials to try and engage the student. Themed lessons involving specific grammar points will also make learning more fun! |

| About Lorraine: I'm a bubbly and enthusiastic young primary teacher. I am very passionate about what I do and I believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. I find it very rewarding when a child gains the skills and the confidence to overcome any difficulties they may have had. |
Teaching Experience: I am a fully qualified primary teacher. Although I have been teaching for only 3 years, I have had experience of working with children of all ages and I have delivered lessons across the curriculum. I have also worked with international students between the ages of 12 and 18, teaching English as a Second Language. |
Tutoring Approach: I provide calm and supportive teaching and work on confidence building as well as the acquisition of skills. I find it useful to relate teaching to what the child is interested in. I will work with children/parents to set both short and long term goals of what they want to achieve and communicate clearly about current performances and where strengths and weaknesses lie. |

| About Alastair: I am a highly qualified English & Drama teacher who is friendly, patient, organised and who focuses on getting the best possible exam result for your child. I also come with a genuine passion for my subject and the needs of the individual student. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English Literature & language for the past 5 years both in the UK & abroad. I have worked in both the state and private sector and am currently leading drama workshops across the UK as well as tutoring in and around London. |
Tutoring Approach: In my mind, private tutoring is about providing pupils with the support and encouragement they need to further their understanding of a certain subject or overcome a specific educational hurdle. I find the intimacy of one-to-one tuition invaluable as it allows me to focus on the specific needs of an individual rather than the general needs of a whole class. I believe in identifying the difficulties a student is facing and then tailoring my lesson to suit their specific needs. I like to work with students at their own pace and believe that an empathetic relationship is the key to good teaching. Most importantly however, I have a real enthusiasm for my subject and have learnt that when I use this thoughtfully, I am able to spark the student's interest so that they both enjoy and contribute towards the process of learning. |
