About Meghali:
I am a person who enjoys meeting and interacting with people, and have particular experience with children. My love for Theatre and Drama has developed me into an articulate and expressive individual with good communication skills, and I continue to be a part of various theatrical activities at Durham University.
I consider myself culturally sensitive, and find beauty in the diversity different locations have to offer. I feel I am able to adapt to new surroundings and challenging situations very well, having lived in many different parts of the world. Consecutively, cooking is another interest of mine, and I take delight in experimenting with cuisine from different countries. I am an ardent traveller, and have predominantly enjoyed visiting a variety of resorts in India, Switzerland, Italy, Oman, and historic spots of London and Paris.

Teaching Experience:

I have attended a fortnightly reading session with Year 3 students at my old school, as well as having done volunteer work with a junior school for their Sports' Day. I have also been a guide for 11-year old dyslexics during their time spent at our school for scholarship examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

Will alter depending upon the nature and ability of each individual tutee.

About Leela:
I am a fun, confident and friendly person who loves to be able to give others the opportunity to better themselves and learn more about specific subjects. I am a very organised individual and like to expect this same attitude from the person I am teaching. At A-Level I achieved full marks for one of my English Literature papers and achieved 2 A's and a B. I have a Bsc (Hons) degree in Speech and Language Therapy from University College London which is now 7th in the world rankings, and have received the degree prize for achieving best theory to practice application. Due to my university being very academic, I have had to adopt an organised and professional attitude to my studies and hope that this is reflected in my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have done tutoring at GCSE level before for French and found this extremely rewarding and so would like to continue tutoring for other subjects such as Biology, Drama and English Literature. I like to be very visual with my students for example doing spider diagrams, brain storms and always making sure that the understand something before moving onto a new topic. I have also done "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" (TEFL) abroad for a summer where I taught in a deaf school in Bangalore, India. This developed my patience greatly and made me learn new and valuable skills. Throughout my degree, I have had the opportunity to teach young children from 2 years right up to 16 years how to deal with their speech and language problems and adapt my teaching to suit their levels of understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a no-nonsense approach to tutoring as I expect my students to put in 110% each time, as I do for them. I like to be visual and create worksheets that will help them understand the material much better. I am also very encouraging and like to clarify that my student understands something before moving onto a new topic. I hope to gain trust with my students so that they also feel comfortable enough to tell me all the problems they have with their studies so I can do my best to help them through this.

About Paula:
I am a professional actor with experience of stage and television. I have had my fair share of auditions (good and bad!) and I understand how nerves and stress can hinder success with drama examinations and auditions.

Teaching Experience:

Along with Theatre In Education work, in the past I have been employed by The British Museum to perform plays and workshops on Greek Theatre.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe one on one tutoring can be of huge benefit to an individual, and in the case of practical subjects it is a necessity. Tutorials should be very much student led, focusing on their needs and development. Teaching should be based on praise and encouragement and should always be made as enjoyable as possible - people learn better that way!

About Katharine:
I graduated from Oxford University in 2006 and was the recipient of a Progress Prize in November 2005. I am a very strong academic and have been working in the field of education at an independent school in Notting Hill Gate, where I monitor the progress of students and have been responsible for their university applications. I have also done some private tutoring work there, as outlined in the 'Teaching Experience' field below.

I will be returning to university in September 2008 and will begin a postgraduate course in Law, so I will be leaving my full-time job and looking for student to tutor privately in London. I am flexible as to the location and I would enjoy having students at my house in West Dulwich, if it is not inconvenient for students to travel there (I live a few minutes from Herne Hill station, which is five minutes by train from Victoria). I am also happy to travel to the student's home, depending on location.

As well as my 2:1 in English Language & Literature, I was an excellent student of History and Music A-Level and achieved 'A' grades in both, receiving full marks in History AS-Level (300/300) and in the Performance Module of Music A-Level, both for AS (90/90) and A2 (90/90). I also took Gold Medal with Honours in both The Speaking of Verse & Prose and Acting, as well as Grade 8 in Singing (with Distinction) and Piano, all before I had left school.

Teaching Experience:

In my current position as Acting Director of Studies at an independent school in West London, I have also assisted two overseas students who needed help with their English in order to be able to enter university. In both cases I worked intensively on exam technique in order for the students to improve sufficiently before their next scheduled exam to get the grades they needed. Both students achieved the required score in their next exam and progressed to university.

For 2.5 years I was a volunteer assistant at the Stretton School of Speech & Drama, helping to teach students aged 11 - 16. As well as helping students select and prepare pieces for recitals and LAMDA examinations, I gave mini-workshops to classes on mime, accents, stance and other details for improved acting, taught the basics of sight-reading and sight-acting, covered for more senior teachers in their absence and taught the Theory of Speech and Drama to Grade 6 standard. As my experience, qualifications and confidence grew, my responsibilities increased and by the end of my experience I was holding classes of up to 15 students on my own. My favourite memories are of privately tutoring the more shy students, assisting them with their pieces, and helping them to prepare for their upcoming exams.

I used the skills I developed outside of these classes by giving free private tuition to peers who wanted to improve their basic singing.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very proud of the achievements that I have listed because I feel I worked very hard to accomplish them, and I think that this is why I make an excellent private tutor.

The best person to help someone who has a problem is someone who has experienced that problem themself. If I had always been a perfect student, I do not think I would make a good teacher. But I wasn't always a perfect student: I had to work hard at some areas, and I learnt to 'play the game' by picking up excellent exam techniques.

My approach is as follows.
(1) Try to pinpoint the student's difficulty. Is it a lack of understanding of the material? Do they understand but need greater depth of knowledge? Have they developed a 'mental block' about that subject?
(2) Explore that problem with them, helping them understand what is holding them back as the first step to helping them resolve the problem.
(3) Constant practice is the best way to ensure a proper understanding and knowledge. Going over and over the material with the student in different and interesting ways will help them understand the information whilst keeping it fresh.
(4) Encourage the student to read around the subject, if time allows, and provide the necessary starting-point for their extra reading. Teaching them to apply all the knowledge they acquire is paramount.

About Larissa:
I am a former writer and editor for New York Moves Magazine, now based in London. I received my BA in the "Great Books" program at St. John's College, a broad-based curriculum of the seminal works in philosophy, literature, history, math, and science. I am about to receive my MA degree in Classical Theatre from Central School of Speech and Drama.

Teaching Experience:

I tutored for a year in New York under the federal "No Child Left Behind" program, and before that, led daycare sessions at the San Francisco Tennis Club, for children ages 1-6 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I examine what work the student is doing in school, where he is having difficulties, and try to determine from where those difficulties stem. I prefer to ask leading questions rather than to merely correct mistakes; I find the student begins to understand more quickly and thoroughly that way. When editing written work, I advise the writer on how to improve the work for clarity and elegance, pointing out structural and stylistic problems, and encouraging the writer to make those changes himself before I offer my own solutions.

About Duncan:
I have a keen interest in Theatre and literature. I have travelled across the U.K. and Republic of Ireland as an actor and director in Theatre In Education. I am confident, sociable and very patient.

Teaching Experience:

I spent nine and a half years on tour as an actor and director in touring theatre in education, teaching various curriculumn subjects to children aged 5-16 through drama. The process also developed drama and social skills such as group interaction, confidence building, speaking and listening skills and reading and writing. I also have experience of teaching one on one, small groups and classes through working in schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient, enthusiastic and spend time trying to find the best way to communicate what I am trying to impart to the pupil. I like to explain through demonstrating, working through problems with people and tailoring my approach to the individuals learning style.

About Emma:
Hi, I'm Emma! I'm 24 and a native of Boston, Massachusetts, though I've lived in Cambridge for a few years now. I hold degrees from Cambridge University (English) and Harvard University (Classics and Anthropology) and will start my Ph.D at Cambridge in the fall. (It's in Renaissance literature, and most of my research is on Shakespeare's theatre company and Elizabethan performance conventions). From September-December 2007 I was in Tokyo, studying Japanese and teaching English language and literature courses to students at Nihon University. Now I'm back in Cambridge, working various jobs (teaching and otherwise), and am very keen to meet more students and get more teaching experience!

In my free time, I see a lot of theatre (or as much as I can afford...) and a lot of ballet, write dance reviews for an online journal, and read cookbooks compulsively. I'm also an ex-competitive swimmer and water polo player and try to get to the pool as much as possible. I've also become increasingly curious about open-water swimming...

Teaching Experience:

While at Harvard I worked as a trained undergraduate tutor at the Writing Centre, helping students in all courses to gain confidence and independence in their college writing. While I was happy to help with specific assignments and particular details, I tended to focus more on larger issues of personal style, argumentative and organisational strategies, and critical thinking. Beyond these more formal tutoring arrangements, I copy-edited and proofread several of my friends' senior theses (dissertations). I also tutored some local children in beginners' and intermediate Latin grammar. [I studied Latin in school from age 12-18 and took several university-level classes in Latin poetry and prose. While my formal education in Classics ended in my second year at university, I use Latin quite often in my studies in Renaissance lit, so my grammar skills have stayed up to scratch.]

More recently, I've taught ESL courses (elementary->intermediate level) for Select English in Cambridge, and freelanced as a proficiency-level English conversation tutor. While in Tokyo I led free-conversation courses for Japanese university students and assisted in teaching classes in English literature and art.

Tutoring Approach:

Well, I suppose that my basic approach to tutoring has something to do with taking students very seriously, and always treating them as the valuable, independent minds that they are.... so of course, my tutoring sessions tend to be very interactive & founded on personal interest and respect. I have observed that a great deal of tutoring -- certainly in writing and literature, probably in any subject that requires critical thinking of some sort -- is actually about boosting the student's confidence, and dissolving his/her inhibiting deference to phony obstacles and phantom authorities. It's about showing students that they actually have all the necessary resources and abilities to express themselves cogently, to clarify their thinking and defend their convictions, and to cope with all the truth they observe --> and that they should WANT to do this!

While I am happy to focus on particular assignments or questions, my goal is to make all my students more confident, efficient, and effective writers and thinkers. I also try to show students (by example if nothing else) that the subjects really can be FUN, and that studying the arts -- by translating a passage, critiquing a poem, writing a short essay, whatever -- is one of the fundamental ways that we learn about ourselves, as well as the world around us.

About Kasia:
Recent graduate with academic experience in History, English and Media Studies. Also have good knowledge of film studies, teaching English as a foreign subject, and entrance exams/essays or CVs. Flexible and reliable, I cater to the individual's needs and encourage not only knowledge of the desired area, but good studying techniques and practices. I'm calm and patient, and work to the student's pace of learning rather than a specific work schedule.

Teaching Experience:

No academic qualifications, but have tutored foreign students from home for 4 years, and assisted GCSE and A-level students previously. Been involved in several teaching workshops, particularly for children.

Tutoring Approach:

I respect individual approaches to learning, and work out with the student the best way for them to develop. I understand the need to feel comfortable with the material, and attempt to find ways for students to respond individually, rather than force my way of teaching upon them. I prefer to be interactive, rather than completely text-based, and encourage discussion and involvement rather than lectured-style teaching.

About Joseph:
Approachable and friendly professionally trained actor, writer and English teacher. Graduated with a first (distinction) in Drama and Creative Writing from University in East Anglia and have travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, including four months in Japan. I'm from a family of teachers and have a keen interest in helping other people do better.

Teaching Experience:

As well as doing theatre outreach and workshops in Drama and Acting while at university, I have had work experience working as a classroom assistant in nurseries. After graduating, I trained as English as a Foreign Language teacher in Budapest (Cambridge accredited Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). Since then, I have worked as an English teacher in Suffolk, Hungary and Japan, both privately and with schools (including the Working Holiday Association in Tokyo). I have taught all ages and abilites; and more nationalities than I can remember.

Tutoring Approach:

I consider myself to be a life-long student; I'm always seeking out more knowledge and experience. I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn almost anything and that there are no bad students; only bad teachers. The key to learning effectively is feeling relaxed and enthused, and these are the two elements that are often sorely missing in regular teaching. I favour one-to-one lessons because of the opportunity to cater personally for each students needs to help them progress in the way that suits them best. More formally, my methods lean towards the interactive and the communicative, with focus on the student being as active as possible in the lessons.

About Kasi:
I am currently an English Literature student, studying for my first degree and about to begin my final year. I wish to tutor as I think it is a fun way to use the skills I have acquired to help others, as well as make a little bit of extra money while I learn.

I have A-levels in English Literature, Psychology, Philosophy, English Language, as well as Maths, Photography, Critical Thinking and General Studies. I have eleven GCSE's, included in this is Drama and Graphic Design, as well as Religious Studies. In my first year of University i took combined study of Drama and English Literature, but have chosen to specialise.

I have been awarded two scholarships from my University, the first is for Academic Excellence for the high scores achieved in my A-Levels and my continuing progress through my course, and the second is a foundation scholarship, awarded to students who have helped out their colleges or schools for attending university. I was part of my college student council, and the university student council during my first year.

I also volunteer with young people aged 13-25 at the Tate Art Gallery on a number of different projects, often in conjunction with the police or with AdAction.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience stems from my work with young people. This experience is not just artistic, it allows for people from many different life styles to come together and learn, with the art as the basis. I have worked with youths from Birkenhead, teaching them photography myself, and as a teaching assistant for the other parts of the classes, so that they could later get onto an art foundation course. I have also worked with young refugee's, teaching them to cook for themselves, and with groups of difficult teenagers who had been involved with alcohol and drugs, attempting to get them interested and involved in other areas.

Overall my teaching experiences have been varied and beneficial.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to attempt my best to make the subject matter and work fun and enjoyable. I understand as a student myself that this is not always so, but even if the work itself is not the students favourite, the way in way they learn can be always made to be enjoyable rather than a chore.

Having taken courses on learning skills, i know different approaches to how different people learn, and using these skills I feel I will be able to help students find what is the best way to study for themselves, not only for that moment, but for the future so they can take this skill away from our lessons and apply it with in all other classes.

If you wish me to be able to travel to you, then my travelling expenses must be paid for. Anywhere within a 2 mile, or 5 mile radius that can be travelled to by bus will mean adding an extra 3 to the cost of the tutoring session.
(If you have paid for a 1 hour session this will make the full price 15+3 = 18, and a 2 hour session would be 2x!5 = 30 + 3 = 33, and so on for however many hours are booked at once.)

About Victoria:
I am an enthusiastic person, who puts in 100% effort to whatever I turn my hand to.

I am friendly and enjoy meeting new people and students.

My interests include keeping up to date with latest film and book releases, dining with friends and when I have some time, going to the theatre.

Recently I have also been trying to get in shape by going to Salsacise classes twice a week at my local leisure centre.

I am extremely excited about hearing from potential clients.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified teacher, currently working in a secondary comprehensive school where my classes range from Year 7 to Year 11. I am extremely passionate about teaching, and as I have said I am very enthusiastic, which I feel confident comes across throughout my lessons. During a recent lesson observation I was awarded a level 1, which translates as an outstanding OFSted lesson.

I have been privately tutoring two students for the past year and feel ready to take on more tutees now. As well as this I have also worked for SUL language school during the summer holidays, where I enjoyed working with students from overseas.

During my training at West Buckland I particualrly enjoyed working in the EFL department with the students from Hong Kong who were of a range of ages.

I would welcome requests to tutor students in any of the subjects I have listed from KS2 to KS5, as well as adults who would like some tuition.

Tutoring Approach:

My main aim is to make English come alive for students, whatever their age. I try to be fair and consistent, and assist students in raising their confidence levels.

I realise that whilst English might be my passion, for some it is difficult and uninspiring. I look forward to working with such students and helping them find a window for enjoyment within literacy.

I am fully committed to providing value for money, an example of this would be, a student I have been working with has recently been set a project to complete as part of their homework. As well as encouraging them with suggestions for putting this project together I have also arranged a day trip where the student can gain more information to enhance their project.

As well as tutoring in literacy skills, I am also happy to assist with homework assignments and coursework.
