About Rowan:
I am 25 years old and I am currently studying to complete my PGDE (PostGraduate Diploma of Education) at Strathclyde University (Jordanhill). I have a degree in English Literature and Film & TV studies at M.A (hons) level from Glasgow University - I graduated in 2005. I then moved to China where I taught English as a foreign language for 18 months. After my return I worked in finance for 1 year, and then decided to return to secondary teaching on a full-time basis. My CV is very varied and I consider myself to be an enthusiastic, experienced and professional tutor.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in some capacity since 2003. In 2003 I was a voluntary student tutor at a local Glasgow primary school, a placement arranged by my University. In 2004 I was employed by Glasgow University as a peer mentor as part of the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) programme, assisting younger students with coursework and building a sense of community to the department I was part of. In 2005, after my graduation, I lived in China for 18 months as a teacher of English as a foreign language to students aged 16 - 25. I was responsible for the creation of the curriculum I taught, as well as the appropriate assessment.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy teaching and have been teaching in some capacity since 2003. My manner is considered to be welcoming, friendly, patient and professional. I am interested in the theories of education as well as the practice of it and have experience of working with a variety of age ranges and group sizes. In addition to this, I am experienced in teaching both English language and English literature and consider myself able to approach both. I was popular with my students and I enjoyed using innovative methods in both teaching and assessment; in my EFL teaching, I witnessed a visible improvement in my students.

Although I prefer one-on-one learning, I am also very computer literate and am happy to enter into a degree of online tutoring. I am also happy to check and proofread coursework and help with specific exam preparation.

I was also successful when employed by Glasgow University as a mentor; the students I assisted were able to achieve higher coursework marks than previously.

Overall, I would say my approach to teaching and learning places an emphasis on the learner, rather than the results. I always tried to achieve a greater understanding of the subject and the material rather than better exam results (which should, I believe, be a happy side-effect of a deep understanding of the material), and this worked well with the students, who enjoyed this approach and the freedom to explore the topic it gave them.

Qualifications:
M.A (hons) English Literature & Film and TV Studies
PGDE (Secondary Education)
