About Gerlof:
I am a South African Expat and I have been living in the UK for the past 6 years. I graduated from University of Pretoria in 1978 with majors in Physics and Maths, and obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein in 1992. I worked as a research scientist with the Atomic Energy Corporation in South Africa until 1994 and then farmed mangoes in the Lowveld for another 7 years before emigrating to England. My wife and I live in Exeter with our youngest daughter who is eighteen. As a full time teacher I have enhanced CRB clearance.

Teaching Experience:

I have lectured at university level for two years, and have six years of GCSE-and A-level teaching experience in England. My A-level subjects are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition I have been involved in private tutoring since my university days. I find that being trained as a mathematician as well as a scientist gives me a unique insight into problem-solving.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that problem-solving by the tutee under the supervision of the tutor is the best way to identify weaknesses and solve them there and then. In this approach, we don't waste time discussing what students already know, but rather concentrate on what they don't know.
When I accept a tutee I will give complete commitment and I will expect complete commitment in return. I pride myself on only accepting students who really want to succeed. Too often students waste their parents' money going through the motions.

About Neshan:
I am currently a final year student at the university of Manchester pursuing a degree in Economics and Finance. Originally from the island of Trinidad, I am friendly and outgoing and most of all I have been told by many of my peers, extremely patient. I am fluent in English and have knowledge of basic Spanish. I have 7 CXC distinctions, 4 A-Levels and my current GPA at uni borders at eighty percent. I was also the recipient of a national scholarship based on my performance at A-levels. Other interests of mine include photography, cooking and playing music. I am a very determined individual and simply try to do my best in whatever I undertake. I have applied this throughout my life and have seen major success.

Teaching Experience:

I have not had any official paid tutoring jobs and this will be my first tutoring work. However I have been leading group studies and revision clinics (voluntary) since studying for GCSEs. Even at uni not much has changed as I am always offering my help to anyone who needs it. Based on these experiences I believe I have developed certain skills and strategies that would help students better understand subject material.

Tutoring Approach:

The key to understanding for me depends on how the information is presented and communicated as a result, my approach to tutoring is quite varied and depends on the individual involved. Generally I would take the material and simply explain it to the individual at a level I think would be appropriate. I would give enough time to ensure proper understanding and answer any questions. If possible I try to find possible applications depending on the area of study. Once this is complete and to ensure one remembers the materials, I would do small quizzes and more importantly I work through past paper questions especially in preparation for an examination. All this is however done in a relaxed, open atmosphere.

Qualifications:
a-levels: Economic(A), Business (A), Accounting (A), GP (a).
current GPA (economics and Finance) 81.33%

About Oliver:
I'm Oliver, I'm a 26 year old from Sheffield with English as my first language. I have just completed a degree in education studies and history at the University of Derby and have experience in cultural and religous history as well as the more traditional topics.

My education portion of my degree looked at the psychology of learning and behaviour management, allowing me to understand many learners and the difficulties faced.

I am commited to acquiring additional knowledge through my own development and love languages, currently engaged in learning Japanese with another private tutor in Sheffield whom I can recomend.

Teaching Experience:

Having completed a degree in education studies and history, I have extensive experience teaching from primary, through secondary and even post 16. As well as this I have been involved in private tutoring and youth work throughout my time at university.

Prior to this I was a technical coach for a major internet service provider and built and delivered a variety of bespoke training programmes in IT related fields.

Tutoring Approach:

My main approach will always be to teach an academic skillset to underpin the traditional study of any subject. This allows me to help learners understand how they learn and make them more autonomous, skills often taught at university. These skills are transferrable to other areas of life and will help focus and organise learners.

On top of this, it is my aim to provide guidance from the curricula and provide a widening of this through directing reading and personal development - but every learner is different and as such discussion and ongoing reflective review would dictate the tweaking of any style to match that of the learner.

Qualifications:
Degree in Education Studies and History

About Abigail:
I am 26 years old and married. I live with my husband in Sunderland, where he owns and runs a pet shop. I am very passionate about children's education and am always dedicated to helping the children that I teach to reach their full potential. I am friendly and polite and have always got on well with children and adults.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a primary school teacher in July 2007. My course gave me experience in teaching children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, although I am qualified to teach all of the primary years. Since qualifying I gained experience teaching children from Nursery to Year 6 on a day to day supply teaching basis, until I secured a long term supply job in a Year 1 class. I taught there from January until July 2008. All of the children in the class made progress, and many exceeded the targets that had been set for them at the beginning of the year. I put a lot of effort into identifying the children in the class who were experiencing difficulties, and set aside extra time, and made extra resources to help them. As a result the children moved on in their learning, and their parents were very pleased with their progress. As the contract ended in July I will be doing day to day supply teaching again after the summer holidays.
Before I qualified as a teacher I was a nursery nurse; first at a private nursery and then in a Reception class. This gave me a lot of experience at working with children in the Foundation Stage and I learned what children at this stage should be achieving and how to help them to do this.
For 6 months before I began my teaching course I tutored an 8 year old boy in maths and English. He made good progress, and his reading age in particular really improved.

Tutoring Approach:

When I tutored an 8 year old boy a couple of years ago I always made sure that the activities we did were relevant and suitable for his needs. I selected books that matched his reading level, and devised questions about the texts to develop his comprehension skills. We played a lot of games such as word lotto to help him consolidate skills that we had been working on, and most of these games I created myself. I varied the activities so that he did not have to spend too much time on each, as he could not concentrate for too long on one thing. So an hour's lesson might have been made up of reading flash cards, reading a book, writing answers to comprehension questions, playing a word game, writing some sentences, playing a maths game, and practising some number sentences using one or more of the 4 operations (add, subtract, mulitply, divide). This ensured that he was active all of the time, which helped him to learn.
While working in a Year 1 class I made many resources such as flash cards and games to use with the children. I really enjoy creating resources, and would be very pleased to devise appropriate activities for any future children that I might tutor. I would also try to use the children's interests to help them to learn. When I tutored in the past the boy loved Dr Who, and so we wrote stories about Daleks and Cybermen. He was learning about punctuation, spelling and grammar, but didn't really realise this as he was having a good time making up stories that interested him.

About Elizabeth:
Having just finished my A-levels and started university in Newcastle I am a very open and friendly person. I am easy to talk to and love to help people and pass on my knowledge of Geography in the way I feel is most appropriate.

Teaching Experience:

My work experience for A-level was in a primary school and this is the only teaching experience I have. However as only a few months previous I myself was sitting my A-levels I feel that the revision and learning techniques I used that were so successful are still fresh and ready to be passed on to those who are now in the same situation I was not long ago.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very professional attitude to tutoring, merely passing on my knowledge in the simplest of terms that worked so well for myself. As I only passed my A-levels a couple of months earlier I am keen to pass on my student friendly approach to studying the subject of Geography.

Qualifications:
GCSE- Geography A*, English Lang/Lit AA
A-Level- Geography A, English Lang/Lit B
Currently studying BA Geography at Newcastle University
