| About Ruth: Having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Economics in July 2006, I have spent the last 12 months working at HM Treasury as a Government Economist. However, this experience confirmed to me that i do not want to pursue a career in Economics and have instead returned to University to undertake a law conversion course with the hope to eventually qualifying as a solicitor. Whilst completing this course, I will be working part time as a tutor, teaching both Maths and Economics up to A level standard. I am also happy to teach reading and writing skills to children working towards Key Stages 1 and 2. As well as an outstanding academic record, my excellent interpersonal skills and my ability to communicate complex or technical ideas in a simple manner make me an excellent choice as a tutor. I am also used to working with children of all ages having worked at a Saturday kids club and Brighton Child Contact Centre. I am also the eldest of four children! |
Teaching Experience: At college, I was a school mentor, travelling regularly to local schools to help children with basic reading and writing. During my gap year I tutored several different children both for Key Stage 1 and 2 Mathematics. Over the last four years I have also helped my younger brother and sisters prepare for GCSE's and AS/ A Levels. |
Tutoring Approach: I do not think there can be one approach to tutoring as the best method depends on the strengths, age, attention span and personality of the student. Before tutoring a student, I like to spend some time with them assessing what learning methods they enjoy and which methods are most successful. I also like to assess their enthusiasm and ability as these are both key to how I structure my lessons. For example, some students may find the standard teaching approach most successful, however, other students might need the tutor to present the material in an innovative manner to make it interesting and also most importantly to ensure that it is remembered. I do, however, like to give all my students work to do in between lessons to ensure that they have fully understood the concepts and can apply them in the correct way. I also find that if they can complete these, their confidence in their own ability greatly increases and this further improves their ability in the subject. |

| About Nadeem: I have a PhD in Mathematics from Cambridge. I have many years of research experience in mechanical engineering at good universities in Europe -- ETH Zurich Switzerland, Cambridge, Imperial College London. This has given me a good knowledge of Physics and Chemistry as well. Recently, I lectured in Further Mathematics & Statistics at the London South Bank University, and I am currently a Research Scientist at Queen Mary University of London. I am also working for a Cambridge scientific consultancy. |
Teaching Experience: I have lectured in Further Mathematics & Statistics at LSBU as noted above. I have many years of experience tutoring students at universities. I have developed very good communications skills by giving lectures at workshops, and innumerable talks and presentations at seminars and conferences. |
Tutoring Approach: It is important to develop a warm and friendly relationship between tutor and student. The student must feel comfortable and be able to approach the tutor with questions and problems without any inhibition. I try my best to encourage, talk to and be patient with students. I combine formal tutoring with questions and answers, homework and small tests to constantly monitor progress. The student must feel that he/she is making progress. Having taught weak students, I put great emphasis on developing knowledge of the basic elements of the subject which lays the foundations for the rest of the subject. The rates that I charge are negotiable. |

Tutoring Approach: I am a committed and professional teacher, and pride myself on seeing my students perform well at all levels of education. I have a good degree from Cardiff University and am able to support and stretch the most academic of students. However, I am also approachable and supportive and enjoy helping students who find the subject more difficult to achieve their maximum potential. I see the study of English as absolutely key to an individual's future success. Good communication skills are vital in today's competitive employment market, and core English skills lie at the heart of communication, be it oral or written. I am also committed to the importance of English Literature, as a way of facilitating access to the rich and diverse culture(s) which surround us. I believe that literary study can not only allow engagement with the dominant British culture, but enrich understanding and appreciation of other cultures and traditions. |
