Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Danny: I'm a Maths graduate from Cambridge (previously a scholar at Westminster), currently working as a programmer developing science software for schools. I'm also an author of both technical books and fiction. I have two young children of my own, and have a keen interest in education and child development - on a personal level, I'm fascinated by how the mind works and how humans evolved. |
Teaching Experience: I'm an experienced tutor, with many successful former pupils, mostly at GCSE level, but also A-Level and beyond. I have a teaching qualification (in adult learning), although I do think teaching and tutoring are rather different. In my day job, I also work in the educational sector, so I have a lot of contact with schools and teachers and understand the educational climate. And as mentioned above, I have written a published textbook on Maths and Physics. |
Tutoring Approach: In my opinion, the role of a tutor is to support teaching rather than replace it. Mostly, I find that people coming to me are struggling because they are missing a key piece of understanding - my job is to find those gaps and help to fill them. A good tutor often doesn't even need to know the material the student is working on: sometimes just having someone to learn along with them and go through the work together is enough to make a difference. |

I have experience of working with students with learning disabilities and other special needs (particularly autism and autism spectrum disorders). |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Catherine: I am a current undergraduate of the University of York studying Chemistry. I did Biology, Chemistry and Physics for A level, and Maths for AS. I found out this year that I am mildly dyslexic. This hasn't seemed to have affected my studies too much until university level, but has meant that I am more aware of other people's difficulties and strengths. I am a member of St John Ambulance, so I am CRB checked. A level marks, Biology B, Chemistry C, Physics C AS marks, Maths D GCSE marks, Double Science: A*A*, Maths A |
Teaching Experience: Being a house prefect at my final school meant that I dealt with all kinds of problems. Mainly social, but I did have younger students come to me for help with their science problems. They tended to find that my explanations were easier to understand than some of the examples they were given. I am also an adult instructor at a local Cadet Unit. |
Tutoring Approach: I use real-life examples where possible, and will use visual aids. I myself have found that learning by wrote isn't always enough, and can lead to confusion later on. Therefore by learning the concept behind the subject being taught is very useful, especially if it connects to other subjects. It helps to reinforce other subjects and helps lateral thinking skills. I will use the text-books and examples the school teacher has already given, as introducing too much information can cause confusion. I will endeavour to use the right kind of information and learning style for each individual student. |

| About Reza: I am a 19 year old student and I am currently in my 2nd year of studying medicine at King's College London. I am a keen sportsman and I play for my university's football team. I also enjoy tennis, swimming and going to the gym. I am a person who knows the value of education, which is why I always encourage others to take their studies seriously. I take great satisfaction everytime I help my fellow students with their studies. Finally, living in a multicultural city, I thoroughly enjoy interacting with people of all cultures and backgrounds. |
Teaching Experience: Before going to university, I voluntarily tutored year 9 and GCSE students at school. I found this very enjoyable as I felt I was making a difference in other people's education. I am currently mentoring year 1 medical students who are unfamiliar with university education. |
Tutoring Approach: Having been taught by excellent teachers, I will use many of their techniques in my tutoring approach. Having recently been through most of these exams myself, I will know the strategies that will help my tutees feel confident about answering exam questions. I am also a very patient person, which is a very useful attribute since some students can take a while to understand certain concepts. |

| About Sophie: I graduated from Cardiff University this year and I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Hons) in Journalism, Film and Media and Sociology, Second Class Honours, Division One (2:1). I am considering returning to education in September 2009 to complete a PGCE and become a teacher, but until then I hope to gain some valuable experience in teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently working as a teaching assistant at local family learning days in and around Swindon. I assist the teacher in teaching both cookery and arts and crafts to children and their parents. For example, I recently taught children and adults to make mosaic tiles with a safari theme in relation to Black History month. Moreover, I have volunteered to help out at Ruskin Junior school in Swindon on several occasions, helping 7 year old children with reading and simple maths. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an approachable and friendly individual with an encouraging approach to tutoring. I believe it is essential that I form a friendly bond with my pupil so he or she feels comfortable asking me questions that to others, the answers may be obvious. When tutoring smaller children, discipline is important to me because without respect, the pupil will be unlikely to take the lesson seriously. However, I do like to bring an element of fun to the lesson and try to be as creative as possible. With older pupils, I feel I am a tutor disguised as a friend, with the emphasis on a relaxed environment in which to learn. |
Qualifications:
| BA Journalism, film and media and Sociology |
| A level Law (grade A), Psychology (grade B) and English (grade A) |
| AS Level History (grade B) |
