| About Alexis: I am currently a graduate student from Canada, studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen. I have a strong background from my undergraduate degree in life sciences but tutor several non-science subjects as well. |
Teaching Experience: I have privately tutored students for the past 4 years in a variety of subjects including: basic sciences (biology, chemistry), maths, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, english, writing and reading comprehension. I have experience with students from the elementary to university level. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring sessions usually begin with a review of any class lessons or homework that have posed a problem in order to identify areas of weakness, followed by an explanation of the underlying principles. We then proceed to work through assigned material as well as additional problems to ensure complete understanding. I am very patient and able to explain the reasoning behind what it is that we are doing in order to help the student fully understand the material, allowing them to apply it on their own in the future. I have experience teaching to students with a variety of learning styles and am able to adapt in order to cater to their individual needs. |
Qualifications:

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About J.: I am a fully qualified teacher, who left her teaching position to travel some years ago, and fell in love with the Arctic! After various adventures (including gaining my MA, beginning my PhD and working at the University Writing Centre) I have returned home, and am happily planning to return to teaching. I have just enrolled on a Return to Teaching course in Cambridge and would like very much to continue my work as a tutor in the evenings, both to earn money for my course and because I thoroughly enjoy it! (September 2008) |
Teaching Experience: In 1989 I graduated from my PGCE course with a Distinction, having focussed specifically on English and History. I then taught in a secondary school in North England for some ten years, before leaving (prior, I thought, to applying for a head of department position) to travel for a year. On my return I worked as a basic skills, English and Maths tutor on various occasions, and also as a Nanny, before returning to the Arctic where I continued to work with language via an MA and then a PhD course, and as a tutor in the university Writing Centre. Most recently I have worked as a self-employed EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher for adults in Cambridge. Having decided that I miss full-time teaching, and working with younger students, I am undertaking a Return to Teaching course at Anglia Ruskin University in order to update my knowledge of education policy etc before applying for a position in a school. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel strongly that all teaching should be focussed upon students as individuals, and that it is possible to work through a student's weaknesses by working with their strengths - this generally means that lessons are also more interesting and enjoyable for the student! Lessons should also be flexible, in that they respond to student's own questions and any problems that they might be having - and yet ultimately focussed on improving specific skills (for example reading aloud, writing clearly or mental arithmatic). Organisation on both sides (teacher and student) is very important - listening to students and working patiently together is vital. |
Qualifications:
| BA (Hons) (Archaeology and Ancient History) |
| PGCE (English and History) - Distinction |
| MA (Anthropology) |
| PhD (ongoing research) |
