About Sophie:
I am a freelance translator, having graduated in Spanish and German from Kent University in 2002 (during which time I spent a year living in both Germany and Spain). I am currently studying for an MA in Literary Translation at Exeter University. In between, I travelled around Europe and worked for some time in London as a PA at the Chartered Institute of Linguists. I love anything to do with languages and would like to continue to my involvement in education.

Teaching Experience:

After graduating, I spent a year teaching English in Spain (all levels to both children and adults) and London and for the last three years I worked as a Saturday morning Spanish teacher for children aged 5-11. I've also done some voluntary work in primary schools working with children with difficulties in Literacy. I currently do some private tuition in Spanish (at GCSE and beginner level) and GCSE German. References are available upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

After the tutee lets me know what areas he/she would prefer to work on, I can prepare some relevant material and build on that: I have plenty of books, CDs, sheets and Internet material! I am keen to let the tutee work at his/her own pace and not feel overloaded with information, although it is also important to feel challenged. Particularly for children's lessons, I would be using games and pictures. I aim for the lessons to be relaxed and enjoyable and would hope that the tutee feels comfortable and encouraged, and not awkward about making mistakes.

Although my fees are listed as 12.00, I normally reduce the fee to 10.00 if the tutee lives within walking distance.

Qualifications:
BA (Hons) German & Spanish (high 2.1)
CELTA qualification (Pass)
A-Levels in English Lit (A), Spanish (B) and German (B)

About Mark:
After twenty years experience in engineering and IT I am now starting a photography business being about to complete a photography degree.
In my professional experience I have had to provide technical support to people of all abilities, often having to teach complex subjects in plain English.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of mentoring new recruits and student interns in professional environments; tutoring Maths and sciences to GCSE and A-level; and informally teaching friends and colleagues many aspects of IT/computing and photography.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to understand what the 'tutee' needs from me. No two people are the same so I tailor my approach to your requirements and skills. I believe that everybody is capable of understanding any subject -- the key is to make that breakthrough: and by finding the holes in the learner's grasp of a subject great things can happen!

HNC Electronics
MSc Manufacturing Technology

About Louise:
I love reading and learning new things everyday. Life is fun and full of opportunities, and I feel it is my job to help people discover this. Learning should be fun and rewarding, not full of fear of failing and struggles, so I have an informal approach and students find me down to earth.

Teaching Experience:

I have coached and trained for many years in a corporate environment, dealing with many different people and their different styles of learning.I have learnt to be adaptable and flexible with students to help them get the maximum out of our time together. I have tutored children who have attention problems, and adults who need to brush up on basic skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer an informal style, designed to get the best from my students. I will adapt material depending on your ability and the way in which you digest information. I like to make learning fun and I try to link information learnt to normal everyday situations to help students remember things. I work most effectively with people who struggle with the normal strict style of teaching adopted by most schools, and those who need help to concentrate.

About Katharine:
I graduated from Oxford University in 2006 and was the recipient of a Progress Prize in November 2005. I am a very strong academic and have been working in the field of education at an independent school in Notting Hill Gate, where I monitor the progress of students and have been responsible for their university applications. I have also done some private tutoring work there, as outlined in the 'Teaching Experience' field below.

I will be returning to university in September 2008 and will begin a postgraduate course in Law, so I will be leaving my full-time job and looking for student to tutor privately in London. I am flexible as to the location and I would enjoy having students at my house in West Dulwich, if it is not inconvenient for students to travel there (I live a few minutes from Herne Hill station, which is five minutes by train from Victoria). I am also happy to travel to the student's home, depending on location.

As well as my 2:1 in English Language & Literature, I was an excellent student of History and Music A-Level and achieved 'A' grades in both, receiving full marks in History AS-Level (300/300) and in the Performance Module of Music A-Level, both for AS (90/90) and A2 (90/90). I also took Gold Medal with Honours in both The Speaking of Verse & Prose and Acting, as well as Grade 8 in Singing (with Distinction) and Piano, all before I had left school.

Teaching Experience:

In my current position as Acting Director of Studies at an independent school in West London, I have also assisted two overseas students who needed help with their English in order to be able to enter university. In both cases I worked intensively on exam technique in order for the students to improve sufficiently before their next scheduled exam to get the grades they needed. Both students achieved the required score in their next exam and progressed to university.

For 2.5 years I was a volunteer assistant at the Stretton School of Speech & Drama, helping to teach students aged 11 - 16. As well as helping students select and prepare pieces for recitals and LAMDA examinations, I gave mini-workshops to classes on mime, accents, stance and other details for improved acting, taught the basics of sight-reading and sight-acting, covered for more senior teachers in their absence and taught the Theory of Speech and Drama to Grade 6 standard. As my experience, qualifications and confidence grew, my responsibilities increased and by the end of my experience I was holding classes of up to 15 students on my own. My favourite memories are of privately tutoring the more shy students, assisting them with their pieces, and helping them to prepare for their upcoming exams.

I used the skills I developed outside of these classes by giving free private tuition to peers who wanted to improve their basic singing.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very proud of the achievements that I have listed because I feel I worked very hard to accomplish them, and I think that this is why I make an excellent private tutor.

The best person to help someone who has a problem is someone who has experienced that problem themself. If I had always been a perfect student, I do not think I would make a good teacher. But I wasn't always a perfect student: I had to work hard at some areas, and I learnt to 'play the game' by picking up excellent exam techniques.

My approach is as follows.
(1) Try to pinpoint the student's difficulty. Is it a lack of understanding of the material? Do they understand but need greater depth of knowledge? Have they developed a 'mental block' about that subject?
(2) Explore that problem with them, helping them understand what is holding them back as the first step to helping them resolve the problem.
(3) Constant practice is the best way to ensure a proper understanding and knowledge. Going over and over the material with the student in different and interesting ways will help them understand the information whilst keeping it fresh.
(4) Encourage the student to read around the subject, if time allows, and provide the necessary starting-point for their extra reading. Teaching them to apply all the knowledge they acquire is paramount.

Qualifications:
BA English Language & Literature (Oxon) 2:1
A-Levels: History A, English A, Music A
The Speaking of Verse & Prose: Gold Medal [Honours] Acting: Gold Medal [Honours]
ABRSM Grade 8 Singing [Distinction] & Piano; Grade 5 Violin [Merit]

About Curtis:
I am a young professional, recent English graduate, living and working in North West London. I am currently spending a lot of time thinking about careers and my professional ambitions and something that always comes up is teaching. I remember how frustrated I would get with teachers and classmates at school, because my learning style wasn't the same as everybody else's, which is inevitable in a class of 30. This is obviously the great attraction of one to one tuition and I would love to get the chance to pass on some of my knowledge.

Teaching Experience:

I have little experience of teaching, but having left university just over a year ago and completing my A levels in 2003, I am still in touch with the AS and A2 specs for English and am easily capable of brushing up on texts before meeting pupils. I also still have a lot of course notes and secondary reading material and I'd hope that, as a younger person, students might find tuition from me a little less daunting.

Tutoring Approach:

As I am new to this, I would be inclined to mimic the style of my good teachers at school, prepare handouts and visuals as well as going through essay structures and exam techniques for the student to keep in their own notes. Some close textual analysis of key passages in the text as well as more topline views of plots, themes and characters. GCSE, AS and A2 level specifications are widely available online and give detailed points of focus. I also have a lot of friends in the teaching profession who have given me example material, that differs minimally from the notes and handouts I have from A level and GSCE.

I am a likeable guy with an energetic and honest personality. I have often thought about teaching and friends have urged me to do it. I am ambitious and successful in my professional life, but I am hoping that the chance to tutor might give me valuable experience to go into teaching within the public sector.

Qualifications:
BA (Hons) English
A Level English, Drama, Law
9 GCSEs A*-B
