Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Felicity: I am currently studying law at the University of Edinburgh as an undergraduate. I attended several different schools and so was exposed to many different types of teaching. I have been in both English and Scottish systems, although all of my examinations were taken in the Scottish system. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience includes a considerable amount of time spent mentoring and teaching younger pupils french during my final year at school, both as full classes, small groups and individuals. Primarily I dealt with first and second year pupils although I do have experience of providing assistance to pupils up to standard grade level. I believe that the skills used across the age groups I have taught before transfer easily and effectively to other age groups. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is that each child learns in a different way and hence dependant on the child the style in which to tutor them varies greatly. However, I am a great believer in positive reinforcement and patience. In many cases encouragement and presenting information in a slightly different manner works miracles, enabling the child to suddenly see the connections as well as providing them with a valuable tool which can in future help them to work out difficulties themselves by employing similar techniques. Even if the child has real difficulty with a specific area then simply being creative in the way you explain the material can make a difference. For example, appealing to all of their senses and capturing their full attention. Getting them involved with the process is key. Most importantly, however, is to try and make things fun and keep the atmosphere light and as pressure-free as possible, allowing them to process information and reach a conclusion with stress. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Mike: I am a retired teacher with 30 years experience. I have been tutoring since my retirement. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught maths at all levels up to A-level in a variety of secondary schools and also as a part time lecturer in a tertiary college. I did a little private tuition when I was a full time teacher, but took on more once I had retired. So far all of my students have attained at least the grades they sought. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to approach tutoring in a fairly relaxed way and appreciate that many of my students come to me because they are not getting the help they need in school. Successful tutoring is about building confidence and this is best achieved in a fairly informal setting. At the same time students, and their parents, expect value for money, and my tutor sessions are carefully planned and well structured with plenty of back up and practice material. My experience as a GCSE teacher of long standing enables me give students valuable insight into what examiners are looking for and to provide them with invaluable advice on exam technique. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Patricia: I am a mother of two wonderful young adults. I am now pleased to be living in the South East for the first time since my school days. I live in a lovely 4 bedroomed house with a large garden and orchard. I am currently enjoying supply teaching in several schools in the Reading. My personal interests include singing, listening to classical music, personal development, nutrition, craft work and learning new things. |
Teaching Experience: I have had a wonderful and varied teaching career for the last 27years in Wales, England, USA and Kuwait. I have enjoyed teaching children from age 2 to 18 and also adults, but I have mainly taught children in Primary school. Some of the children have had special needs including Hearing Impairment, specific learning difficulties such as ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and other learning difficulties including Aspergers' Syndrome and Downs' Syndrome. I am familiar with basic BSL (British Sign Language) but as I have not used it for a few years I would need a while to get up to speed. I have taught English as another language to both adults and children. I have also enjoyed holding several classes teaching crafts such as knitting, crochet, cross stitch, tapestry work, making stuffed toys and fabric collage. |
Tutoring Approach: I am familiar with the National Curriculum requirements for the Primary age range and I have a specific programme that teaches reading, writing and spelling in a holistic way. One of the reasons why some children (and adults) have difficulty in grasping mathematical concepts is that they need more practical (concrete) experience, which I aim to provide. I use several strategies to enhance learning and make it easier for my pupils and students. Brain Gym is a series of simple exercises to integrate both hemispheres of the brain. This enhances the understanding of the subject being learned by creating new pathways. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is an easy self administered acupressure technique which is a wonderful tool to help overcome emotional blocks to learning (e.g. in Maths and Reading). I have also found that certain classical music pieces enhance the learning, especially when coupled with a holistic approach. This includes sight, hearing, speaking, touch, movement and joy. |

| About Tamara: My name is Tamara and I am 25 years old. I am from Austria and therefor my mother-tongue is German. I am also a secondary school teacher in Austria for the subjects English and Biology. At the moment I am working as a foreign language assistant. |
Teaching Experience: During my studies to become a secondary school teacher I did several teacher trainings for 4 weeks per term. I studied for 3 years and did 24 weeks of training. I taught pupils from 10 to 16 years of age. I taught in different ways - open learning, Montessori methods, group activities, and so on... Next to my studies I gave private tutoring lessons in English, German, Maths, Biology, Geography, Maths and German as a second language. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all I try to find out at what level the learner is. After that learner and tutor have to agree on how to go on, what key aspects of activity are being set, what goals should be achieved and so on. Different aspects of a language e.g. grammar, pronunciation, ... need different kinds of tutoring. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Ian: I am 46 years of age and work as a supply teacher as I enjoy the flexibility this affords me. I mark both SATs and GCSE papers and have extensive experience of preparing students for both Key Stage 3 and 4 public examinations. Lessons in your own home, on an individual basis or in small groups, and I am willing to travel up to 10 miles from Barnsley. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught maths for the past five years across the full ability range, including the independent sector. Working on a one to one basis, I can quickly assess a student's true grasp of topics, recognise weaknesses and address problems within the subject. Once this is done, and confidence improved, students should find that they grow to enjoy maths and look forward to demonstrating their new found confidence in lessons at school. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to teaching is relaxed, friendly and caring, which helps to create an effective learning environment, since young people learn best when they are comfortable and yet stretched just beyond their comfort zone in a non-threatening way. Each tutor session is planned for the student's particular needs, and regular monitoring and questioning takes place to ensure progression is maximised and misconceptions and errors are explored and corrected, and I am able to adjust the delivery to suit the individual student. |
